Your project isn’t that difficult…more labor intensive…you’ll find that removing the tile you’ll loose the drywall as well. This is fine because you’ll want to get down to the studs to secure the surround. After that, plumb the shower, replace the drywall, tape, mud, sand, prime the new drywall and paint.
no it’s not! home depot or Lowe’s has great kits. they also have the knowledge to share with you along with instructions that come with the kit.. also the tech people with the manufacturer will help
One of the most important things is measure for your cut outs twice. After you drill your holes its too late to change locations.
If your rebuilding walls its easy to leave the drywall off on the faucet side, insert surround, mark the drill outs, pull out surround then drywall.
I wouldn’t use drywall anywhere near a bathtub-shower surround. Go a little extra and use cement board. Then you can forget about water damage on the walls.
What you will need to find is an “old work” style of tub surround. This will probably arrive in 4 pieces: the tub, 2 side walls and the back wall.
the single piece fiberglass surrounds are installed at the framing stages of homes and are not designed to fit through doors.
If the tub is still in good condition, you can but just the plastic tub surrounds and install them over PRIMED water resistant drywall. Just make sure that you buy the good quality ones that are about 3/16″ thick, not the 1/16 size that are junk.
It’s very easy. Try to not mess up drywall when removing tile, if you do, replace with green board or cement board it dont have to be totally perfect the surround is covering it. Get a three piece kit, tub-paneling adhesive, and some caulk. They have some nice kits these days with shelves, soap holders built in. I put in one of these kits for my mom when I was about 15 or 16, its easy
